What You Need To Know About Gas Logs Installation

If you have purchased gas logs for your fireplace and are ready to start enjoying a warm, comforting fire, then it’s important for you to know how to install them.  It doesn’t take an engineering degree to get them in proper working order but it is highly recommended that you hire a qualified gas installer to do the job.  If you do it yourself, be sure to read the instructions carefully and follow them closely.  Gas logs installation can be done in just a few hours but a couple more days are required before you can use them.

Once your gas logs are installed, they must be approved by a city inspector.  This is true even if you already have a venting system installed inside your fireplace.  The cost of this inspection generally runs around $50.00 depending on your location.  In order to install gas logs, you or your certified gas contractor can obtain an installation permit.  The gas installer cannot get the permit on your behalf.  You may even have to have a pressure test done although this is not always required.  This test is done after the gas line is installed but before it is connected to the gas supply (from the propane tank or gas meter).  The line is then capped and filled with air to test for any leaks.

The pressure test is generally done during the first day of installation.  The following day the city inspector will verify that the overall installation is correct and that the pressure test is acceptable.  The qualified gas installer will then return on the third day to connect the gas supply to your logs and give you specific instructions on how to use your gas heating appliance.  Of course, it will take less time if you already have a gas line installed in your fireplace.  All you need done in that case is to connect it one day one and have a final inspection done the second day.

Once your gas logs installation is done and approved, you will still need to have it inspected and serviced once each year.  In addition, you should have your chimney looked at and cleaned when necessary.  Chimney cleaning services often send out coupons giving you special discounts for their services.  If you get one, use it and have your chimney cleaned!  Also, make sure that the burner stays clean and free of soot.  This is especially critical for ventfree logs because gases are not vented outdoors.  You certainly don’t want your home to be dusted with unsightly soot!
