What Are Ventless Gas Logs?

Gas logs are fast becoming very popular in the United States as a way to supplement home heating methods.  They come in two different models:  Vented and unvented.  You will need to decide if your home is best suited for ventless gas logs.  An important thing to remember is that they burn very hot so less carbon monoxide is expelled.  With vented logs, more harmful gas is given off, so they need a venting system to expel harmful toxins away from your home.

If you think that you want the ventless version, then keep in mind a few things.  You will need to compare it to a vented version and decide which one is more efficient and attractive.  You will also need to check local building codes to make sure ventless logs are legal in your area.  And, because ventless logs burn so hot, you want to make sure that your fireplace is away from all combustibles.

Unvented logs do not produce a roaring fire effect that is present with vented logs.  Ventless logs operate with the chimney flue closed so that all the heat generated stays right in your home and not lost out the chimney.  This is an important energy-efficient consideration.  They resemble an actual fire, with the cement logs stacked on top of the heating element.  They come equipped with a thermostat so that you can control how warm you want the room to be.  You’ll want to make sure that you keep air circulating throughout the room with ventless logs because they add moisture to the air which can cause the formation of mildew.

Ventless logs are not always legal so don’t install one unless you have found out about any restrictions in your area.  Some local and state codes forbid them altogether or limit their use in bedrooms, recreational vehicles and bathrooms.  These codes also require that they not be installed close to curtains, furniture or other flammable objects.

Ventless gas logs can be a welcome and energy-efficient addition to your home.  Even with some restrictions, they don’t require you to install any type of venting system in your fireplace or through a wall.  This is the primary advantage of these logs.  Whatever you decide to do, you will get a little more heat at a cost that just might fit well into your budget!
